I heard the other day that they're an invasive species. If so, they're doing pretty well for themselves!

I got curious, so I double checked--apparently they originated in Asia--they're actually banned in a couple of New England states, although no one seems terribly concerned about them elsewhere. But get this:

"E. alatus, Gui Jian Yu, is used in traditional Chinese medicine to remove blood stasis, promote menstruation, remove toxic materials, subside swelling, and kill insects or parasites."

So--it's medicinal!

I had no idea that it had any other purpose other than looking pretty in the fall.
