Good job they weren't all chained together!

I suggested a new security device to be attached to each inmate, in case of just such an incident:

A noose.

No place is safe from his kind. The time of the safe, innocent small town is long over, more's the pity.

So was he unhappy about the nasty orange jumpsuit or the no shoes thing?

I was just going to add, "Really, what was he thinking?" - then I realized he probably wasn't.

Don't you love small-town life!

He had shoes on at the time -- orange sneaker type things, with no laces -- but they got taken off pretty quickly by the broken leg brigade *ahem* -- I mean, medics. :-)
Generally, I think he was unhappy because he'd totally screwed up his life, and was running out of other people to blame it on.

(And yeah -- I do love small town life!)

Ooh. You got a by-line.

Not sure if that's really what it's considered but I've always wanted to say that.

It was interesting actually seeing the article in print. It's funny, but I do find that I am affected by the print media I read something in--a short story in a magazine will impress me differently than if I first read in an anthology printed in a book.

by, by line
I get by-lines all the time; generally I'm used to it, but every now and then I stop and stare in wonder, torn between pride and embarrassement. It's important to remember, though, that I'm published in three papers, each serving communities of perhaps 3,000 people -- so fame is a relative thing.

And you're quite right, of course -- where and how we read something makes that something seem different. Believe me, if the time comes that you read one of my stories between the pages of a book, it'll seem very different than seeing a manuscript of the same story. Hope you get that chance!

I'm confident that I will.

I'd go a step further and say it wasn't a well thought out *life*!
