The hand reattachment surgery went well

Yeah, so, I chopped up three of my fingers in a fan yesterday ... and while staunching the flow of blood thought to myself, "Well, at least this will make a good column", which just goes to show I have my priorities in order. Actually, it's not that bad relatively speaking, but since I type as part of my jobs and typing is a bit painful at the moment, I'll be limiting my writing and internet time for a few days.  (I didn't take any time off because one of my coworkers lost her grandmother at the same time, and funerals trump sick days in my mind.)

Emily did a bang-up job with first aid, then two hours later twisted her ankle on the basement stairs while washing the blood-soaked sheets (the fan was by the bed). Have this summer's medical issues been nature's way of balancing out the good news of getting my novel published?

Anyway, there'll be a short delay in writing until my fingers heal a bit, then I'll get right back on it. Oh, my subject line? No, nothing actually got cut off; do you believe everything you read on the internet? On a related note, I'm brainstorming more heroic explanations for the damage. At the moment the story of how I saved a baby from an attacking lion leads the list.

Oh my! Not fun at all... and I hope it heals up quickly!

Although if it's your right hand, you might find that you can type more quickly than you think. Having had both hands out of commission at different times, I discovered that it's much easier to get by in typing with just a left hand than just a right hand... not that it's a cakewalk or anything, but it is easier. (Okay, this is assuming you touch-type using the standard method.)

Hm .... that's interesting. I do touch type, but luckily I'm still able to use all my fingers (although more slowly, and I have to avoid pounding on the keyboard as i sometimes do.)

I wonder why they left would be easier? Hopefully I'll never have to practice that, but you've got me curious.

...or even better, how you saved a lion from an attacking baby.

Feel better!

You're not the only one to mention that inversion -- I wish I'd thought of it!
Aug. 7th, 2011 07:52 am (UTC)
Eeep! Sending along massive healing vibes asap.

Just when we need them, too!

Well, they're not okay ... but as long as I take it easy I can still type, some. But really, if things are going to happen anyway -- might as well get a column/blog out of them!

Ouch! *winces* Glad you didn't actually lose any appendages, get well soon!
Aug. 8th, 2011 12:45 am (UTC)
Thank goodness it was plastic blades instead of metal! It was set on high.
Aug. 7th, 2011 11:35 am (UTC)
You had me going there for a minute with the hand reattachment! Hope the fingers and the ankle are better soon.
Aug. 8th, 2011 12:45 am (UTC)
It was a cruel headline, wasn't it? and the first thing that came to my mind, too, so I must have one cruel sense of humor ... but don't worry, we'll heal up just fine!
Aug. 7th, 2011 12:26 pm (UTC)

Hope it heals quickly

Ditto for Emily's ankle!

Hey, that's exactly what I said! Actually, what I said was ... well, I'd rather not repeat it, except for the part when I called myself an idiot repeatedly.

But I appreciate your concern, and I figure this too, will pass ... I'm keeping her iced and off her feet, and she's keeping me bandaged and doused with antibiotic ointment!

Well, I don't know if the US knows the story, but a 17 year old boy was killed by a Polar Bear last week on an adventure holiday, so you could up date it to a Polar Bear instead of a lion.
Aug. 8th, 2011 12:53 am (UTC)
Yep, it made the news here, very sad. But I don't know if anyone will buy me saving someone from a polar bear, what with their not being any around here and all. I should go with an animal that actually exists in Indiana. I saved a baby from a deer? Nah ....

what, what?!

I did a double-take at your entry title. Jeez. I'm currently reading my sister's E.L Konigsburg book, Journey to An 800 Number, and the female lead Sabrina collects freaky news from the papers, one of which is of a girl, Renee, who got shoved in the subway and got her hand cut off. Renee is a flutist. So they rescued her hand and reattached it. Of course, they doubt she'll still be a flutist after the reattachment...

Almost every home here in the Philippines have fans. But no one ever nearly loses fingers. There are grills over the blades. Ack! Get well soon. If you have an iphone, you can download Dragon Dictation for free. Instead of typing, you talk. Instant speech to text conversion. There's also Dragon Dictation for pc, costs $99.

That was cruel of me to use that headline, wasn't it? Especially since it really happens, as in that book ....

There was a grill over the blade, but years ago I removed it after the fan got damaged in a fall, and afterward I wasn't able to get the grill back on. So, in other words ... it was all my fault. Maybe I should get that Dragon Dictation -- at the rate I'm going, I'll need it!

Yiiiiiiiiiiiikes. 0_0

Really hope the healing recovery goes well!

Aug. 8th, 2011 01:06 am (UTC)
Don't worry, I'm staying medicated.

Okay, worry. ;-)
Aug. 7th, 2011 02:11 pm (UTC)

I hope you both feel better soon!
Aug. 8th, 2011 01:06 am (UTC)
Thanks -- so do I!
Aug. 7th, 2011 02:53 pm (UTC)
Ouch! I'm glad you're okay!
Aug. 8th, 2011 01:07 am (UTC)
Well, okay is relative -- but we're recovering!
Aug. 7th, 2011 03:03 pm (UTC)
The subject line really got my attention. I'm glad to hear it wasn't cut off!! Take your time healing up!
Aug. 8th, 2011 01:07 am (UTC)
Yeah, that subject line was just cruel. Thanks for the concern!
Aug. 7th, 2011 03:20 pm (UTC)
Oh - ouch! And an ouch for poor Emily, too.
Aug. 8th, 2011 01:09 am (UTC)
I think she's in worse shape than I am -- joint injuries aren't any fun to heal from, and now her knee's hurting, too. But don't worry -- I'll keep her iced up and off her feet.
Aug. 7th, 2011 03:40 pm (UTC)
Holy crap!!!!! Here's to swift healing! Jeez. :(
Aug. 8th, 2011 01:09 am (UTC)
Thanks -- swift healing would be good!
