Raiders of the Lost Ark march -- live!

The Fort Wayne Philharmonic came to Albion Sunday -- making up for their storm-canceled Christmas concert on a day when we tied a record high temperature. It was my first time hearing a live orchestra -- fantastic, breathtaking. I still can't believe an orchestra pulled off a Beatles medley, but I think Lennon and McCartney would approve.

It was probably the most relaxing two hours I've had in a long time, although at the same time my mind kept peppering me with ideas for stories through the whole concert. Maybe writers never really relax?

Orchestra concerts can be the best thing going if you have the right conductor. I've been to the LA Philharmonic with a guest conductor that was soooooooo boring people were leaving BEFORE intermission. It was embarrassing.

On the other hand, I've also seen guest conductors that are out of this world. I try to go to the Hollywood Bowl every year when John Williams conducts. Absolute poetry.

It is. Whether he's conducting classical, big band, his own music or the music of another movie composer, he is awesome!

I think I've got more John Williams music CD's than anything else in the house ...

Nods. Nothing better than hearing the music live.

I would say it depends on the type of music, though. I'm not a fan of rock music live -- too loud, too many screaming people. But when it comes to classical, I'm a convert.

It really was -- I told Emily I want to go around to all the philharmonic concerts from now on, but luckily for my wallet our schedule would never allow that.

That sounds like a good afternoon. Do you think you'll start going to Fort Wayne now for concerts?

I'd like to, but it depends largely on money and scheduling -- mostly scheduling, at this point.

So I'm not the only one who likes film scores?

Up here the National Arts Centre Orchestra has one of the premier conductors (and violinists) in the world, Pinchas Zukerman, at the helm. He's outstanding.

Most of my CD collection is film scores. Williams, of course -- and by the way, he composed some music for the show "Gilligan's Island". I'll bet money I know which episodes it was used in, too. I remember watching the old black and white "Lost in Space" and seeing "Johnny Williams" listed as the theme composer.

But also Jerry Goldsmith -- "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" I could listen to over and over -- James Horner, and so many others.
