Large barn fires are made of fail at 3 a.m. -- so much for a relatively quiet Saturday night.  On the other hand, there's something to be said for dispatching them, instead of fighting them, when the temperature hits 16 degrees.

How did those barn fires start?

Sometimes spontaneous combustion, especially if hay was stacked in the barn when it was still a bit too damp or green. Most barns these days have an electrical service, so electrical problems are a common cause -- also, heating if there is any (this barn had livestock in it). I doubt they'll ever know, in this case: The owners weren't home, and it was engulfed before anyone even noticed the fire.

Absolutely! Given a choice, I'd take a fire on a hot, humid day over one on a very cold day, every time.

Does working 3rd shift mean you at least didn't have to get out of bed to go fight it? (Or do you switch your schedule on the weekends?) I hope you're starting to thaw!

No, I was working dispatch when it came in, so I was already up -- it meant I didn't get to go to the fire myself, but it also meant I didn't have to go out in the cold. Mixed benefits, there. I work 11-7, four days on and two days off, all year round, so weekends are just whenever my days off happen to fall.

Not a problem for me! I sat this one out, working dispatch. I missed the cold, and the live power line that burned through and fell, and the fire truck that accidentally backed into another fire truck ... but all things considered, I'd rather be at the fire.

Sounds like the fire, in spite of being a barn fire, was interesting for all else that transpired. Glad you got to stay in out of THAT kind of cold though.

I'm always of mixed feelings this time of year; I don't want to fight a fire or do anything outside, but if there's going to be a fire anyway, I'd rather be there. But the older I get, the less eager I am to go outside!

Read the article I just posted for a clue as to just how interesting that fire got ...
