courthouse fire

The historic courthouse in Madison, Indiana, burned down yesterday while it was being renovated for the town's bicentennial. (Madison is the oldest continuous community in Indiana.)

Madison is where my self-insert (coughMarySuecough) Buffyverse character, the watcher Richard Philips, used to live. Richard was a volunteer firefighter for one of the local departments down there; I can't help thinking that if he'd been there, they could have saved the place. :-/

It is; I'd be devastated if our historical old courthouse here in Albion caught fire. I can't imagine our county government having the will to rebuild something as original and majestic as that.

It sure is. And the timing: they'd just finished a $150,000 renovation, and the bicentennial celebration of the town is just two weeks away.

Thanks, and yes -- very sad. Luckily there were only two injuries, both very minor.

While I hate to hear about any fire, I especially hate to hear about historical buildings burning down. :-(

Agreed. They just put $150,000 into renovating it, and here it is just two weeks from their town's bicentennial ...

How did it happen? Do you know the cause?

No, not yet -- with a fire that huge there'll be a major investigation, but it'll be awhile before the results are in. Considering renovations were just being completed, there's a good chance it was related to that work.

Oh no!

As a firefighter, you must see everything as a potential conflagration....

It's true that I never go into a large building without thinking of the challenges involved in fighting a fire there! People must think I'm an architecture fan, always examining structures; but I'm really looking for attack routes, forcible entry challenges and ventilation points.
