Writer's Block: AKA

What's the story behind your username?

Ozma is the ruler of the Land of Oz, beginning with the second book in the Oz series, "The Land of Oz" by L. Frank Baum. Most people these days are only aware of the first book, "The Wizard of Oz", but there were forty more "official" books and a lot more unofficial ones after that -- also, several movies and stage plays.

When I first went online I needed a username for e-mail, and at the time I was reading the Oz books to my younger daughter, Jillian -- she chose Ozma for my user name. Neither of us gave any thought to it someday becoming my common internet username, or we might have picked a male character! As for the number, my volunteer fire department is base 90, and I'm firefighter #14 -- in other words, 914. And so, I've been Ozma914 ever since. Here's a John R. Neill drawing of Ozma, who according to Baum was far and away and most beautiful person, inside and out, in all the land:

On an unrelated note, I'm back online. I lost my voice to a bad sore throat/cold, and then took an unplanned trip to Missouri to pick up Emily, so I've been away for about four days. In addition to her two weeks without power due to the ice storm, Emily's been going through a lot of other stresses down there and needed some time away, so I brought her back up here for awhile -- at least until the end of summer, I'm hoping. We've already embarked on a reorganizing plan for my home office and book collection, and with any luck we'll both be spending our free time working on our fiction writing careers once she's settled in.

Interesting! I think I knew that, but it's always fun to hear the stories behind usernames, particularly when the story isn't obvious.

And I'm glad you could provide a needed sanctuary for Emily. I hope you guys have some relaxing time together.

I'm a fan of relaxing time -- that would be good! :-)

It's good that Emily's got someplace to go to get out from under stress. (Did she have to drop school for awhile? There are plenty of good schools around here.... *g*)

At this point she's planning to go back in the fall, depending on how things go. I'd rather she stayed up here, but she's got a full ride scholarship to the community college down there, so she could get her associate's degree for free, then come up here and apply to a local school to get the rest of the way. But for now it's definitely de-stressing time.

Couldn't you change it to "Tippetarius914"? {g}

I think that would confuse non-Oz fans too much!

Yes, I watched it, and I remember the comment about desktop themes. But do they have to change everything at ONCE?

Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere -- I don't give up that easily!

It's hard to imagine anything damaging Doctor Who beyond repair, after all these years!

Not me -- I was hard core almost from the first episode I saw.

I've known you long enough that I've got a pretty good idea!

Ozma of Oz was one of my favorite books growing up. I was so freaked out by the crazy evil princess and all the heads. I figured that the name wasn't linked because I knew you were a male.... But I always made the reference in my head!

yes, a princess who collects heads and changes her from time to time! Who says the Oz books were just kids stuff?

Now you know why I came to be known by a female name. :-) I had a mad crush on both Ozma and Dorothy when I was a kid -- it was my first fandom, with Star Trek coming shortly after. I've *very* seriously considering writing an Oz book of my own, since Baum's characters are in the public domain.

Check out my most recent post, as Nathan/vovat mentioned what other canonical Oz books are in the public domain. It's quite a few actually! However, I don't know how far into the series you've read or how you feel about the other Oz authors.

I did catch that post! I don't have a problem with the other authors, but I grew up on the first 14 -- I didn't even realize any more were ever written until I was in my 20's. I think I'd stick with the ones I'm most familiar with, if for no other reason than to make it easier to keep all the canon straight. Well, straight as it can be kept ...

Same here with the other authors, though my 20s are the present and your 20s are the past. :) However, I did read Hidden Valley and Merry-Go-Round as a kid because my local library had them. They may not own them anymore as they recently had a book sale and the Baum books were being sold. (On the second-to-last day of the sale, I luckily snagged Emerald City before it was gone, too, though I would have much rather have found Patchwork Girl or Glinda.)

I don't like to think of my 20's as the past ... even if they are. :-)

My local library had Cowardly Lion and a couple of other books, but from the time I moved to town I'd been going to the adult section, so I never found out they were up in the children's area until years later. What a shock that was for me! I asked them to let me know if they were ever discarded, but apparently their copies fell apart and were trashed without me getting a shot at them. Mostly I only own my original 14 and a handful of reprints from the 90's, as well as an ancient copy of Emerald City that my mother stumbled across.

Ozma Between the Lines...... ;)

Teehee.. don't say such things!

Tabz can be the voice of Dorothy!
Mar. 4th, 2009 07:02 am (UTC)
I believe that concept has been taken!
