Buffy fic repost: "And Cancel Slaying!"

We've got about half a foot of snow on the ground here -- and a little sleet. Not as bad as what the northwest has been getting, but bad enough. In "honor" of our storm, which is also hitting Cleveland *waves to vichan*, here's a repost of a story I wrote about this time last year, under similar conditions. Hope everyone's staying as warm and dry as possible!

Giles paused in the middle of checking the morning report, and sent a quizzical look toward Dawn. “Why are we receiving Cleveland School closings? This is Chicago.”

“Read them,” she prompted.

He scanned the list. “East Chicago School for Girls, Cleveland Branch – but that’s our cover story for the operatives there.”

Dawn nodded brightly. “Yep, and they’re covered – they’re all covered. They had a storm in Ohio; everything’s snowed in.”

Giles bit back a question about why a private school of a dozen slayers even had to be on the school closing list – of course, they were trying to make the school disguise as solid as possible.

Of more concern was the image of vampires wading through snowdrifts, searching for stranded motorists. “But – Buffy canceled slaying? We can’t just cancel slaying! The forces of darkness thrive on –“ He paused, coming to a chart that showed a marked decrease in demonic activity. “I don’t understand. She reported just last week that the Hellmouth was opening.”

“Pothole. They do things big over there – even vampires know to stay inside when bad weather hits Cleveland!”

“Did Xander concur with this?”

“He said, and I quote, ‘Yay!’”

“Well, of course he did.”

We've got at least six inches of snow here already. I'm concur with Xander 'Yay'. I'm glad it hit on the weekend and not during the week.

And you know, I need to start writing these short-quick-hitting fics to get back into the swing of writing.

I prefer writing longer stories, but I haven't had time for that -- well, I haven't had much time for short stories lately, either. But if we want to write, we have to find the time!

*waves from underneath a pile of the cold white stuff*

Not as big as the one that originally inspired this, but it's still pretty nasty. I can't leave my house. Even if I could, my car is buried and likely stuck.

I have the advantage of living on a state highway, and they do a good job of keeping them cleared -- but it took all day to dig out the driveway.

Awesome! Slayer snow day!
Jan. 11th, 2009 01:06 pm (UTC)
I don't know if I'd want to get in the way of a Slayer snowball fight!

Man, nobody or nothing wants to be outside during a snowstorm by the Great Lakes. I totally concur with Buffy! :-)

Absolutely! Plus, Buffy's a southern California girl, so she'd suffer even more than people who are used to this -- as if anyone could ever really get used to this.

Dude, I drove to Chicago a couple of weeks ago. Some of those potholes definitely were hellmouths!
Jan. 11th, 2009 01:08 pm (UTC)
We had one open up in the parking lot of the local Wal-Mart, which some people already think is hell, anyway. :-)

Hee! Of course Xander would agree. Great fic!

So far we haven't gotten any snow that amounted to much. We used to get a lot of it and now for the last couple of years we've barely gotten 3 inches. My kids are very disappointed.

For all my complaining, we don't get nearly as much snow as we did back in the 70's and early 80's -- although we get a lot more freezing rain than we used to. Thanks for reading!

I'm near the 'Cleveland hellmouth', and it def. is very snowy. *Flails under a pile of it.*

Good fic writing!

Thanks, glad you liked it!

I live not far from the Ohio border, maybe a three hour drive from Cleveland -- close enough to experience pretty much the same weather, usually.

Hehe. Then be careful wading out of your front door. I feel like I could make tunnels...
Jan. 12th, 2009 08:07 am (UTC)
I assume you've seen the newest forecast? They actually mentioned "blizzard like conditions" here, followed by the other horrible word, "minus".
Jan. 12th, 2009 07:59 pm (UTC)
I am going to build tunnels! :D I'm afraid of the weather so I've been ignoring it as much as I am able to. It LOOKS pretty, and fluffy. But every time I have to put on my boots I sigh loudly and try to remember why I was so happy to do this at age five.

My dog certainly LOVES the snow.

I like looking at snow, I just don't like going out in it -- or paying my heating bills. But I *have* to go out in it, so I'd just as soon do without the pretty view.
Jan. 13th, 2009 03:34 pm (UTC)
Heating bills...oh man. : / BOOOO. I have a dog so I have to go out at mostly random times she decides.

I made my screensaver a fake fireplace. Haha.
Jan. 14th, 2009 06:30 am (UTC)
I'd love to have a real fireplace, but I don't have time to gather the wood. As for cleaning the chimney ... well, home maintenance jobs never go well for me.
Jan. 14th, 2009 04:31 pm (UTC)
I set my toaster oven on fire. :X LoL. (On ACCIDENT, btw.)
Jan. 15th, 2009 07:45 am (UTC)
I would hope by accident! :-)

My house caught fire once, but it was before I moved in -- the roof supports of the garage is still charred. The former owners of my home also reported a fire down the street that was the last one our old 1929 fire engine ever responded to.

Yep -- I'm a geek, *and* a history buff.
Jan. 16th, 2009 06:46 am (UTC)
That's awesome. I mean about the geek/history buff-ness. Not the house being on fire. that is of the suck-ness variety.

(And given your icon, now I think you're a pryro, too!)
Jan. 16th, 2009 02:08 pm (UTC)
I'm a firefighter -- there's a fine line between becoming one and becoming the other.
Jan. 16th, 2009 05:41 pm (UTC)
LoL - good point!

Well, that was way easier the second time around! Here it is:

Jan. 11th, 2009 05:20 pm (UTC)
*snort* Yup, that's the scoobies in bad weather all right.

We're doing much better now--just lots and lots of rain, and the flooding has started. Still, I'm crocheting myself a heavy chenille scarf, because it is COLD!
Jan. 12th, 2009 08:06 am (UTC)
Never say you're doing better until you check the forecast!

*checks forecast*

Oh, no ....
