Hurricane Gustav

I've been hijacked by real life, but I just wanted to pop in and encourage everyone to send your prayers (or good vibes, or good thoughts, or whichever you prefer) to the people of New Orleans, Louisiana, and all the Gulf Coast. I looks like they're in for it, and I hope they listen to the warnings and get out fast, before it's too late. This looks like it's going to be a really bad one.

Hurricane Gustav, a category 3 storm, has left Cuba and is crossing the Gulf of Mexico, and is expected to hit somewhere between Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama tomorrow and may get as big as a category 5 by the time it hits the coast. Right now New Orleans is directly in its path. Fortunately, the evacuations are going much more smoothly and effectively this time (even pets are included in the official evacuation plans this time, thank God), so there shouldn't be much if any loss of life...but the property damage may be major.

I'm sending a prayer as we speak, Ozma.

thanks, and I'm still sending them. Last time I checked it was heading inland, but still a category 2 and dropping a lot of tornadoes.

I'm glad sockmonkeyhere updated you, I've been rushing around like mad this weekend. It's made landfall; looks like it didn't hit New Orleans badly, but that won't make the people just west of there feel any better.

I've made some friends here at this site that cause me to feel personally involved in all of this. Prayer has been the word of the day for several days now. My two friends have already left, thank God. Thanks for posting this, Ozma.

I've always said that the one problem with having a lot of internet friends is that no matter where something bad happens, you have a personal stake in it.

It looks like things weren't as bad for New Orleans as feared, but they got hit hard just to the west of there. But it also appears people took the evacuation notices seriously. Still praying ...

Thankfully it wasn't...and gave us here some good SOAKING rain (which we'll get more of that's non-Gustav related tomorrow).

Did you guys get some much-needed rain? I've heard that at my folks' place at Loon Lake the lake is so low, their pontoon is almost beached.

There was a bit of rain here and there the last several days, not as much as we needed. They are predicting more rain tonight and tomorrow though, so we'll keep our fingers crossed! But I'd rather have a dry spell than get 6 inches, like some places on the east coast did.
