If what I just heard about McCain's VP pick turns out to be true, he's bloody brilliant.

It's risky (recent bad association with Alaskan politicians, plus that investigation that was brought up against her), but he definitely made a good move.

I'm having my own choice words about it, but he's a damn genius. O_o

I guess your choice words would be different from mine, wouldn't they? :-) Don't worry -- I've got a five dollar bet down on Obama to win, and I think I'm going to clean up on that one.

It is a risky move, but McCain is known as something of a risk taker in these matters.

Well...that would make it an interesting race...

That's for sure. It's going to be an election of firsts, regardless of who wins.

He's picked the governor of Alaska for his Vice Presidential running mate. She's a woman, which will tend to further dilute the former Clinton supporters who don't much like Obama at all; and she's a conservative, which will tend to bring in the right wing of the Republican Party, which doesn't like McCain because he's a moderate. I still think his winning is a long shot, but this is the best thing he could do, politically.

ugh, another oil tycoon vice
I've heard speculations about him choosing her for quite some time, and it was brilliant of him to follow through on them. Certainly a great way to steal some of the excitement from Obama--something that really needed to be done for his campaign. She's younger too (relatively speaking), so that'll give him even more of a boost. Rumors of his own sexist behavior, the appearence of his wife... those things kind of slide into the background now.

There are things the Dems can bring up about her, but it's risky for them to attack a woman after Hillary's run. Sexism is an especially touchy issue of late. Biden will have to step lightly during the debates (something he's not great at).

Yeah, a very smart move.

I suppose we'll see how it pans out, eh?

Well, I don't think McCain will be able to pull it out, but it was still a smart move. As you say, they have to be very careful about attacking a woman, and the timing was just about perfect. On the other hand, the argument that Obama doesn't have enough experience to be President becomes less strong with her on the other ticket: she has more administrative experience as governor, but no foreign policy experience of her own -- and I believe she's a year younger than him.

Watching the speech now. I had seen her name around and thought she might be a potential running mate but didn't expect it to happen. Think overall the Republicans have come out ahead in the VP choice. Obama's looks dubious takes the age card from his hand and doesn't really give him the foreign policy edge he was looking for. Plus doesn't tally with the change.

Obviously the intention is to hive off wavering Hilary voters and give a more youthful edge to the ticket.

I believe that's exactly the intention, and it may even work, too.

But the age debate could backfire on McCain -- I believe she's a year younger than Obama, which means attacking his inexperience could bring on a similar attack. She has a lot more administrative experience as governor, but no foreign policy chops that I'm aware of.

Yup, we either get a man who is half African American or a woman residing at Number One Observatory Circle.

This is one of those times when it's good to be around for an historical event!

Truth is, I don't think either one would do all that badly by us -- as a moderate Republican, I remain more afraid of Congress and activist courts than of Obama. To me he seems like a stand-up guy who's honest about wanting to do a good job -- I hope I'm right. Just because I don't agree with all of his views doesn't mean I don't like him.

McCain/Palin in Ketucky
Palin guarantees a McCain victory in Kentucky

Reason- She sunk the winning free throw in the Alaska State Girls Basketball championship game in 1982 despite having a stress fracture in her ankle.

Here in the Bluegrass State, we know what's really important.

Well, we've got Kentucky and Alaska, then! :-) That means my dad will be voting for her.

Dan Quayle. With vagina.

I think he just handed the election to Obama.

Dan Quayle was a good guy and a lot smarter than the national press made him out to be. Unfortunately, he had a case of what would now be called Bushitis: When all the cameras focuses on him, the Spoonerisms flew right and left. I understand that, as I'm afflicted by it myself. Basically, Quayle's problem was that he was young and unprepared for the heat of a national spotlight.

Hm. Looking at it that way, I see your point.

I honestly don't think it matters; for all intents, Obama has it sewn up. Once the election is over and the shouting has stopped, it'll look as though it was inevitable all along.
