Buffy Drabble: Pothole From Hell

With thanks -- and apologies -- to vichan.

Pothole From Hell

Buffy stared in disbelief at the huge hole opening at the intersection of Ontario and Superior Avenues. Behind her ranged a team of slayers, weapons ready, stamping their feet to stave off the cold.

“You’re seriously telling me this is not the Hellmouth opening?” she demanded.

Firefighters, TV crews, and utility workers worked around the hole. Some shot the slayers curious looks, but at the moment they had other things to worry about.

Xander just shook his head. “Water main break.”

Buffy shook her head. “Seriously?”

“Buff, it’s winter in Cleveland. The locals would welcome a Hellmouth, right about now.”

Oh dear, Mark. Winter is really getting to you this year, isn't it? This is a delightful drabble with a terrific punch-line.

Here's something from my garden to cheer you up!

Well, yes, it is, but that's not the main inspiration behind this story:

But still, thanks for the flowers!

Isn't it, though? The unusual (even for us) warming/deep freeze cycles cause the ground to buckle, which causes water main breaks, which washes out the soil and collapses streets. It doesn't help that in older parts of our cities the mains can be well over a century old.

Re: Wow
Not a thing! That just happens to be where the real thing actually happened:

Great drabble. I hope there's not a correlation between potholes and hellmouths as that means theirs one near me.

Only if you have a pothole the size of this one:

Considering the state of the state highway that runs through my town, if you have one, I must too ...

That's a big hole!! Although from the state of my roads I sometimes feel like I'm driving over something that's about to swallow my car.

I drive a very small car, so I have made the joke that it could disappear into a pothole someday. It's not so funny, anymore .... :-)

Glad you liked it! It's not every day I can get inspiration for a Buffy story from current events.

Hee! and Ouch! because our pothole situation is pretty grim.

On the other hand, I remember when I lived in Mississippi sometimes it would get so hot the streets would run out of expansion space and explode.

Oh, yes -- there's a little ridge in the state highway right in front of my house from a heat wave a few years ago. hopefully when they resurface the street next year they'll get rid of that thing; it causes a little pool from snow melt right in front of my driveway. Bad place for a skating rink....

We had a fire one time on a sunny day when it got so hot some of our hose melted to the ashphalt.
