The Noble County Relay For Life is looking for some old friends this year.
As of the February 11 meeting, 26 teams have been signed up for the American Cancer Society event, which will be held May 22-23 at the West Noble High School football field. That’s well over halfway to the goal of 40 teams of cancer fighters, but Relay organizers still haven’t heard from some of the teams from last year. There’s still plenty of time to reform a team, organize a new one, or join a team that’s already been put together.
The goal is to raise $75,000 toward American Cancer Society programs, including research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and patient services. Teams camp out, and keep at least one representative on the track at all times during the overnight event. An estimated 3.5 million people participate across the country, often to honor loved ones lost to cancer and to fight back against the disease. The 2009 Relay brought in $43,000.
The Relay obviously stresses important matters such as early mammograms, survivor celebrations and luminary ceremonies. However, events include various forms of entertainment, and develop a block party type atmosphere. Some of the hourly theme laps this year include graffiti, pirate and “bed head” laps, a poker run, and a contest to make outfits out of duct tape, among others.
Anyone interested can contact team recruitment chairperson Stacey Lang at (260) 894-1418, or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. Registration can also be done online, at www.relayforlife.org/noblecountyin.

It got sunny and above freezing today, so I took a walk. If I'd been carrying a bag of rocks, a lot of people who don't understand the purpose of a snow shovel would be replacing front windows right now.
