fan writers!

self-pimp meme thing

Tagged by mommanerd. (Edit -- and also by alwaysjbj! I'm a little behind on my flist ...) Like her, I probably needed this to cheer me up a bit. Besides, I'm not very good at self-pimping, so it's not a bad idea to get it forced on me once in awhile. however, I'm not going to tag any specific people -- just encourage all of you to try this for yourself:

Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

#1 "Faith's Lesson/Xander's morning". Okay, it's a cheat, but the two stories are directly related. Faith takes some slayers out for a night on the town, but the lesson they learn isn't what they expected. In the sequel, Xander discovers what happened and learns a lesson of his own. It's odd that the tones are very different.

#2 "Robin Lays an Egg". I love exploring underutilized characters, and I threw a bunch of them into this story, which features Robin leading his first post-Chosen mission as a watcher. Everything goes horribly wrong. While having lots of fun with this story, I didn't realize I was setting myself up for what would eventually become my Four Friends series of stories, but for those of you who haven't read my stuff I shouldn't go into too much detail. Suffice it to say that the worse things went for Robin, the more fun I was having.

#3 "Xander's Job". Xander learns of Cordelia's death, and takes it upon himself to break the news to the other Scoobies. It was supposed to be a one shot, but chapter one was so popular that I expanded it into what turned out to be my most popular multi-chapter story.

#4 "A Somewhat Less Than Forever Love". This one-shot kind of slipped under the radar, which is too bad because it made me giggle a lot, and I don't giggle easily. Buffy finally has to choose between *all* of her ex-boyfriends -- or not -- and Dawn gets to do some violence. I had the fun of listening to this story read on sl_podcast.

#5 "She Would be Thirteen". Hey, I can do serious -- and here's proof, as Xander struggles with the loss of a slayer.

This was hard! I mean, how do I know if these stories are any good? I wrote them. Worse, I couldn't decide, which means my stories are either all of equal quality or I'm full of myself. There are two other stories I would pick, with warnings:

"Four Friends" is a long series of mostly unrelated stories, set post-Chosen with a team consisting of the resurrected Tara and Buffybot, the slightly less sane Dana, and an OC slayer named Kara. The warning is that while some of these stories are the best I've done (I especially like the four "Secret" stories), I thought a few others were all too so-so.

Finally is my personal favorite for "odd", "Mary Sue Got Harried". I couldn't really pick it as a favorite, because it's about ... well, me. Or a watcher who happens to look just like me, and what happens to him and several of the gang when a creative writing course goes magically awry. It starts out light, and takes quite a turn toward the end, much to my surprise. Watch for some ... well, odd guess appearances.
