first impression meme

Stolen from hieispike

Are you sick of memes yet? Here's another one.

What was your initial impression of my online persona? Did you think I was young or old, boy or girl, weird or funny? I am curious.

Wow. I'm not sure I remember. I know I thought you were most likely a woman, but that was because of the odds, not anything in your writing or the first emails we sent.

It was obvious very early on that you had a great sense of humor, that family meant a lot to you and while you have definite opinions, you are able to listen to others.

I haven't changed my opinion of you - it's still way up there!

I have noticed that there seem to be more women than men in the internet circles I run in, not that there's anything wrong with that. maybe it's the influence of having two daughters. But I thought people might get mixed up because my screen name is taken from a female character in the Oz books -- my youngest picked it out when she was obsessed with those books back, oh, about six obsessions ago.

Re: Thanks!
Fanfic seems to be dominated by women, not just the Jossverse fic, so a lot of people just assume an author is female unless they find out otherwise.

the fairer sex
I have a policy of always being completely honest in cyberspace, under the theory that it helps make up for not being able to read body language and such. But if I was underhanded, I'd let people go on assuming I was a female just to see if they treated me any differently. I might not like what I find out!

Re: the fairer sex
It might be an interesting experiment. I suspect though that people are more likely to treat men and women the same online, for the same reason that you are prefer honesty. There are a lot of visual and situational cues when it comes the male/female thing. It's easier to treat everyone the same when they are all cyberspace people.

just the same
That's true; and it ties into my contention that everyone is more the same than they are different, if you don't get hung up on appearances.

thought you were a gay man at first. mostly from the buffy references. i think you'd made a good one.

You think I'd make a good gay man?

I guess I'll take that as a compliment.

sensitive, caring, funny, and you're a fireman. that's a big bonus in the gay world.

gay firemen
The firefighters around here would go into screaming fits if they heard that. Maybe I'll tell them. *evil grin*

Oddly, women don't seem to be attracted to sensitive, caring, funny men, no matter how much they may say otherwise. I know many women who are attracted, over and over, to dirtbag types who treat them like crap. Hell, if I WAS gay, I probably would be, too. :-(

I thought you were a woman because of the Ozma icon and because I found your LJ through Buffy fandom. It was pretty clear, though, when I read through some of your LJ that you were a guy around my age. (Well, actually, when I read about your daughter bringing the fake baby home from school, my first though was "he must be a bit older than I am; I'm not old enough to have teenagers". My second thought was "oh, wait, when mom was my age, I was 21 - and she was 21 when I was born". *gulp* I am old enough to have teenagers....) I also thought you were laugh-out-loud funny. (Still do!)

As a single guy, I should love having a hobby that surrounds me with females, I suppose ... but on bad days it does make me wonder what's wrong with me. :-)
Having people say I make them laugh is one of the greatest compliments I can imagine, so thanks lots. A person could do a lot worse in life!
