flea for your lives

I'm not sure if I'll be on tomorrow, so happy one-day-early birthday to roonblah!

On a totally -- *totally* unrelated note, I've been putting in untold hours and expense toward ridding my house of a sudden and unappreciated flea infestation. Where they came from I don't know, but they popped out after our recent storms, at the exact same time that clouds of mosquitos suddenly blocked out the sun in northeast Indiana. Much as I hate winter, this is one summer tradition I won't miss.

The amount of time and money I've had to put into cleaning and fogging is bothering me almost as much as the itching ankles. Almost.

Thank you :)

We've had that once. I tried all sorts of stuff to get rid of them. We even sprinkled Borax on the floor, which apparently chokes them (but is pretty toxic so we would vacuum up as soon as we could). We've since replaced our carpets, so I don't know if that was the deciding factor in driving them off. Our usual problem is ants though - those little suckers keep on comin'.

Good luck :)

My carpets should have been replaced when they went out of style, say the early 80's ... so that might very well be a factor. I sprinkled flea dust on the floor and left it there for almost three days in the hopes of killing the little buggers and their offspring, but I don't know exactly what was in the dust. I do know I shouldn't have been walking through it, but since the bites were working their way up my legs and I was actually spraying bug spray *on myself*, I'd say the dust was the least of my stupidity.

It's amazing the foolishness someone will resort to when the itching drives them crazy enough. (Could I get a column out of this? I mean, if I survive?)

Desperate times. Desperate measures.

Totally believable.

And I definitely think you can get a column out of this harrowing experience. Think of all the adversities you've survived.

I think I might be able to get *two* columns out of this! *Itches for joy*

I've actually got some anti-itch spray that works pretty well. I don't know what's in it, and I don't know whether it actually stops the itching, or whether the burning is so bad that I don't notice the itching anymore ...

I think I got a dose this morning while I was vacuuming .... but not much, because I had all the windows open and the fans on. Say, look at the pink little bunnies dancing ....

Been there....

Actually a vacuum with a really powerful suck is a big help - our Dyson sucked about 20 of the little buggers out of our carpet the first time we tried it, much to my fascination/embarassment - the clear dust collector looked like a flea-circus!

Luckily for me, my daughter got a very nice vacuum as a wedding present last year, and I was able to use that to discover just how crappy my own vacuum is. Also luckily, there were not witnesses to the amount of junk I pulled out of the carpet. Actually, considering the age of the carpet, a lot of that junk probably *was* carpet.

Luckily, they haven't reached my ass. Yet.

You don't have mosquitos? You're the civilized world!

I found one on my thigh yesterday, just after getting out of the shower. Tomorrow I'm doing some work on the plumbing, and will soon be showering in a spray of pure flea poison. I wonder how long I can hold my breath?

crushing them like ... well, you know ...
I'm holding my own. After four straight days of bombing and strafing runs, I'm going in with my ground attack ...

How's the de-flea-ing going? I wonder if your daughter's cat picked them up somehow and carried them in.... My sister swears by those drops you put between the shoulder blades. (For cats - not people. *g*)

Mosquitoes - the severe lack of mosquitoes is one of the few things I really, really miss about Las Vegas. Where did those little buggers pop up from? All summer long there were no mosquitos at all (yay!) then all of a sudden they just appeared along with September. Die! They should all die die die! (Um, yeah. I hate them just a little.)

I'm with you on the dying ...

The cats both vacated the house about two weeks before the fleas showed up ... they're down at my daughter's new boyfriend's house at the moment, because Charis thought I needed a break from animals. (!) I suspect the fleas simply rode in with me, considering I've been having to mow the lawn about every four days since the unusual rains came this August.
